Our preschool friends have been showing a great deal of interest in caterpillars & butterflies. Allison brought in 9 caterpillars from her yard for us to explore. First we reviewed what we know about caterpillars, then we described caterpillars.

We created butterfly gardens with sticks, wood pieces & log blocks. We drew butterflies & used droppers with watercolors to make butterflies out of coffee filters. The children excitedly spoke about the different colors made when colors mixed together on the filter.

Books We Read: I'm a Caterpillar (Jean Marzollo), Butterflies (Karen Shapiro), Butterflies (Melvin & Gilda Berger) & A Butterfly is Born (Melvin Berger).
The last page of the book, A Butterfly is Born asks the question, “Where do you think this butterfly is going?” The children answered the question & provided some interesting responses.

We are very excited this week to welcome two new friends, Jordan & Sophia to our afternoon class. I think they enjoyed their first week here in preschool.

This week we used our imaginations to build with various blocks. Legos, wood blocks, Tinkertoys, Lincoln Logs, log slices, & little log pieces were used to design buildings, farms, houses & more! The children worked together as well as on their own while building. We also incorporated frogs, butterflies & farm animals while building.

Our children are crazy about the song, Five Green & Speckled Frogs. An activity tray was set up with five frogs on a log, wood numbers & the words to the song (visit our FB page for pictures). Some children copied the words on paper &/or identified letters & numbers, some sang the song while making the frogs jump into the pool & others practiced counting. This activity covered so many academic readiness skills in a developmentally appropriate manner.

The children have been talking about butterflies & caterpillars, among other bugs & insects. We will delve deeper into this subject next week. On Friday morning, we discussed what we know about caterpillars.

Busy, busy, busy preparing for our Mother's Day festivities. The children completed their heart creations for their special ladies. They worked very hard on them so we hope you all loved your special hearts! We also experimented with pastel crayons & watercolor paints. The watercolors painted over the pastels have a beautiful effect.

Books We Read: What Mommies Do Best (Laura Numeroff), What Grandmas Do Best (Laura Numeroff), Llama Llama Home with Mama (Anne Dewdney), Mommies Are for Counting Stars (Harriet Ziefert), Does a Kangaroo Have a Mother Too (Eric Carle), The Night Before Mother's Day (Natasha Wing), We're Making Breakfast for Mother (Shirley Neitzel), & No Hitting (Karen Katz). Victor brought in a special book for us to read, One Big Pair of Underwear (Laura Gehl). It was a funny book about math and sharing. The children were full of giggles. Thank you for sharing your book with us, Victor!

Our language chart focused on what our special ladies do best.

This is the last week for collecting sneakers to pass on to Kellen's mom. She is running a fundraiser called Dunk Your Kicks! With your help, The Max Cure Foundation collects gently used sneakers and recycles them as affordable footwear in developing nations to raise money for families battling pediatric cancer. They get a few dollars per pair from a global recycler which then goes towards either funding pediatric cancer research or financially supporting a local family with a child fighting cancer. For additional information please visit https://www.maxcurefoundation.org/dunk-your-kicks/
Qualified donations include: tennis shoes, running sneakers, athletic shoes of any kind, no holes, please! Sneakers must be tied together. Cleats or athletic shoes with metal tips are not acceptable!

Please bring in your donations to Creative Kids Center by May 20
th & I will pass them on to Kellen's mom. Thank you for helping us participate in this global fundraiser.

Have a wonderful weekend! I wish this weather would make up it's mind already!
